If you had asked me two years ago if I would ever post a cocktail recipe on my blog, I would have said no. However, six weeks in California gave me a taste for an ice-cold, sour and sweet margarita. And I was blown away when I had a skinny margarita for the first time at a restaurant in Santa Cruz. Just like the name suggests, this one has significantly fewer calories. Therefore, it’s the perfect summer drink, ice cold, sweet and sour, and with less calories than most cocktail recipes. So, let me show you how to make this low-calorie skinny margarita recipe.Jump to Recipe
Low-Calorie Margarita Recipe
First, I want to make clear that cocktails in themselves have nothing to do with a healthy diet. Alcohol is a stimulant that should be consumed only in moderation (by adults).
However, you may have noticed that I am not an advocate of prohibition and renunciation. So, if I like to have a small glass of wine in the evening, I think that’s perfectly fine. And if I like to snack on a piece of chocolate after dinner, I will never forbid myself from doing so.
And even if cocktails have lots of extra calories in addition to the alcohol, they’re still perfectly fine every now and then. Like so often in life, it’s just about finding the right balance.
That said, I still try to cut down on excess calories whenever I can. And you’ll find plenty of those in a margarita. For instance, the classic margarita is mixed with lime juice, orange liqueur and tequila. This adds up to around 200 to 300 calories per glass.
For our skinny margarita recipe, we simply use orange juice instead of orange liqueur. And we save about a hundred calories. For sweetness, we then add a tiny bit of agave syrup.
The result is an ice-cold, low-calorie margarita recipe! Perfect for barbecues, warm summer evenings or whenever you feel like having a drink. 😊
To make this skinny margarita recipe, we need the following ingredients:
- 4 cl tequila (silver or blanco) which is about 1.4 fluid ounces
- 4 cl of freshly squeezed or store-bought orange juice (1.4 fl oz)
- also 4 cl of freshly squeezed lime juice which is about one and a half limes
- 10 grams or two teaspoons of agave syrup (light)
- ice cubes
You’ll also need a cocktail shaker for this low-calorie margarita recipe. These are probably available for purchase at very large supermarkets or hardware stores. Or you can just order one online.
I only have a small shaker, but it’s perfect for this skinny margarita recipe.
Alternatives and Substitutions
I also used a light agave syrup, which I bough online. But since we only need 10 grams of it, the calories won’t be significantly more, if you use a regular agave syrup.
You can also use some store-bought lime juice. Just make sure to check the ingredients whether it contains additional sugar.
Skinny Margarita Recipe – Here’s How to Make It
The nice thing about this skinny margarita recipe is that it’s super easy to mix. So even for cocktail novices like me it is very easy and quick to mix.
Classically, margarita cocktails are served with a salt rim. To do this, first take one of the two limes and cut it in half, and quarter one half. Now you can moisten the rim of your glass with this lime wedge.
Now take a small plate or a bowl and put some salt in it. Then you place the glass with the rim down on the salt plate and turn it a bit so that the salt sticks to the rim of the glass.
Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of the salt rim, which is why I usually skip this step.
Then all you have to do is to mix the cocktail. To do this, add the tequila, syrup, orange juice and lime juice to your shaker and fill it up with ice cubes. Put the lid on and shake it for about 30 seconds.
Now you can fill your glass with ice cubes, remove the lid of your shaker and pour the skinny margarita into the glass. And your low-calorie margarita is ready to serve.
